Czech chairmanship of PREPARE network is ending. What innovative ideas did it bring to sustainable consumption and production?

12 December, 2014

After three years of leadership, PREPARE president Mr. Zdenek Horsak, Director General of SITA CZ, handed over the Secretariat of the international network PREPARE to Prof. Peter Glavic at the network meeting in Copenhagen last week. The Secretariat of PREPARE, which main goal is to promote sustainable consumption and production (SCP) and the implementation of environmental projects, is taken over by Slovenia after the Czech Republic.

Czech chairmanship of PREPARE 2012 – 2014 under leadership of non-governmental platform EMPRESS brought stronger cooperation of relevant organizations within PREPARE, as well as strengthening the platform for sharing information and experiences, and new financial model less dependent on governmental funding.

“I would like to thank all participating members, thanks to whom we were able to successfully meet the goals of the Presidency. The membership of European leading experts on sustainable production and consumption in PREPARE demonstrates its importance in an international context. I appreciate that initiatives such as PREPARE may continue to develop and contribute to implementation of principles of circular economy and sustainable development,” said Mr. Horsak in Copenhagen and wished Slovenian colleagues great success in further development of PREPARE activities.

Key projects

During the Czech Secretariat, there were completed key projects as TRUST IN, InEDIC or CSI EU aimed at creating environmentally oriented educational courses, eco-design application in the ceramic industry, and implementation of corporate social responsibility in small and medium-sized enterprises respectively. Some other projects are currently being implemented and new ones are in preparation stage.

Vladimir Dobes, director of EMPRESS, says: “Sustainable consumption and production can transform economic and environmental crisis into an opportunity for innovation and improving the quality of life. Our living standards will increasingly depend not only on the use of new technologies, but primarily on new approaches, relationships and partnerships. I am glad that during the Czech Secretariat we established cooperation between PREPARE and the European chapter of UNIDO’s Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production Network.”

Although the Czech chairmanship will officially expire in the end of the year, the Czech Republic formally handed over the Secretariat to Slovenia already on 5th December 2014 in Copenhagen where the PREPARE meeting was held.
